African-American Heritage Student Tour
Day 1
P.M. Appreciate the wonders of nature at the Norfolk Botanical Garden. Enjoy a tram tour through the garden where countless African-American Work Progress Administration workers helped construct the garden during the Great Depression. The Garden encompasses 155 beautiful acres intertwined by bridges, coastal waterways and 12 miles of pedestrian trails. (Educational programs are available where students can learn the wonders of nature with hands on classes.)
Evening
Begin your tour with dinner and dancing aboard the Spirit of Norfolk. Experience freshly prepared food in a nautical setting with dynamic professional live entertainment. Themed cruises are available for student groups.
Day 2
A.M. Hop over to the Virginia Zoo to celebrate wildlife. The most exiting expansion in the Zoo’s history, the African habitat Okavango Delta provides students with 10 acres of unobstructed animal viewing. See lions, tigers and elephants. Students can experience wildlife first hand with the aid of the Virginia Zoo education department.
A.M. Students can stroll through 5,000 years of art history at the Chrysler Museum of Art, home to Walter Chrysler Jr.'s world-class collection of more than 30,000 pieces of art, featuring the museum’s world-renowned Tiffany-glass collection, Art Nouveau furniture, works of art from African, Egyptian, Pre-Columbian, Islamic and Asian cultures and an extensive European and American collection of paintings, sculpture and decorative arts. (Student educational guided tours are available).
Lunch
Enjoy a variety buffet at Golden Corral or a pizza buffet at CiCi's PizzaP.M. Take a bus tour of the world’s largest naval installation, Naval Station Norfolk. A knowledgeable, active duty Navy guide will board your motor coach at the Navy Tour Office and a give narrated tour of the Base. ID required.
Evening
Cruise the Elizabeth River on the American Rover Tall Ship Cruises with pizza and a DJ. What more could a student ask for? The American Rover is the largest tall ship schooner under the American flag.
Day 3
A.M. Explore Nauticus, a fun and exciting interactive science and technology center. It features more than 150 exhibits including computer and video interactive films on a giant screen, exotic aquaria, touch pools, shark petting and national-caliber traveling exhibits. Students can enjoy the wonders of science with hands on educational programs such as "Science in Triumph" where students explore the history of American scientists and the role they have played. Programs are approximately 30 minutes in length and can accommodate 50 students.
Then, tour the Hampton Roads Naval Museum and the decks of the USS Wisconsin, one of the last and largest battleships built by the US Navy. Stand beneath her 16- inch guns and feel the excitement of being aboard a historic warship.
Lunch
A destination for fun and food, Jillian’s is a student’s dream come true! Have pizza, hot dogs or hamburgers. Students will enjoy the Amazing Game Café with the newest simulation games.
